Starting the Year WITHOUT Starting Over

January carries a lot of expectations, doesn’t it?

New goals. New plans. New energy.

For small businesses owners and entrepreneurs (and those with aspirations), it can feel like you’re supposed to flip a switch and suddenly be more focused, more profitable, and more confident than you were on December 31st.

Let’s consider something different as we step into the year 2026.

Instead of looking at January for reinvention, let’s make it about continuation + intention. You don’t need to become someone new. Make it about giving direction to what you already have.

Are you running a business? Then this is the time to set tone, not tempo.

Instead of asking “How much can I accomplish this year?”, consider these questions instead:

What do I want this business to support in my life?
What worked well enough last year to keep?
What felt inefficient or misaligned?
Where would consistency matter more than growth?

Make clarity, focus, and small repeatable actions done well your rewards in January.

Are you business-curious or business - hopeful?

If you are standing at the edge, thinking about starting something, restarting something, or finally taking an idea seriously? Then take January as a time not to leap…but to listen.

You don’t need a business plan yet. You need curiosity, patience, and permission to explore.

Listen to what excites you.
Listen to what frustrates you.
Listen to the problems you naturally want to solve
Listen to the skills people already come to you for.

Let’s look ahead together.

From Slow Season to Springboard—Turning Year-End Quiet Into Q1 Momentum

We all get it. For many entrepreneurs, December like a familiar slowdown.

Clients pause projects, decisions get pushed to January, and inboxes grow still. But slowdowns don’t mean setbacks. We should be looking at them as a built-in runway to Q1.

End of the calendar year isn’t about pressing your hustle harder. It should be about preparing smarter for 2026. Being intentional helps position you better for starting the new year off right, with clarity and momentum.

Whether you are reviewing the past quarter or the last year, treat it as a checkup, not a report card. Ask yourself what worked, what didn’t? When you faced challenges, how did they turn out? Skip the guilt and go (and grow) with the insights.

A strong January starts in December. It could be an overhaul, or it could be a basic reset for the new year. Don’t scramble your way into January – go at it with intention and stability.

Entrepreneurs often overlook the most strategic year-end move: rest. Sustainable success is built on clarity, not exhaustion.

Give yourself permission to pause, breathe, and recharge. A rested mind makes sharper decisions — and sets the tone for a healthier, stronger year ahead.

Remember — the end of the year isn’t a dead spot — it’s a strategic pause. It’s the space where entrepreneurs recalibrate, clean up, regroup, and relaunch.

Use this season to reset your path, refresh your systems, and build a powerful springboard into the new year.

December isn’t downtime. December is your launchpad.

Running a Real Estate Business

Anyone that tells you owning rental properties is a great way to make money has got to be a wonderful fix-it person or insane.

My husband and I currently own three rental properties.

The house at 103 Weir Point Dr., Manteo, NC, was on the market but didn’t sell. So, we rented it to a lovely family from WV. I cringe each first of the month now for the “wait for funds” to be transferred from them to me via Zelle. I also cringe when they call or text me about the latest problem.

One involved an animal in the attic. I called the pest control company (something we pay for as the owners). The problem is that racoons from the nearby national park are climbing a tree, jumping on the roof, and hopping onto the Andy Griffith fig tree for a snack. (Yes, the tree originally came from a cutting from Andy Griffith’s fig tree.) I’m not joking, especially since the lawn, care including tree trimming, is their responsibility as outlined in the lease.

Are you interested in purchasing a home in Manteo, NC? $650k including fig tree and potential racoons. The Cabin at 5956 Critton Owl Hollow Rd., Paw Paw, WV’s original structure was built in 1789. It does have plumbing, heat, internet, and 38 acres.

My renter recently vacated, leaving a mess behind that I won’t try to describe to you. Let me just say that 5 cats, 2 dogs, and 2 parrots were involved. I’ll also mention he “sublet” to a couple, one of which was wearing an ankle bracelet gifted by the state of WV. Subletting was not part of the rental agreement, which stated the rent as $400/month. This fiasco involved calling a parole officer who hadn’t done her job in terms of getting the proper approval for this couple to live there.

It should only take me a couple more weeks to clean that mess up including replacing the furniture they destroyed. Interested in an off-grid get-away? Maybe I’ll AirBNB it at some point.

And finally, the Tudor Square Townhouse. We have owned this one for over 20 years. The first renters were Scouting America connections. One was an Eagle Scout and his new wife (I knew his parents and helped him earn his Eagle badge), followed by a lady who worked at the Department of the Interior Indian affairs (I think she was a friend of one of the former scoutmasters).

Next was a couple who became down on their luck and asked their church to pay their rent. We didn’t take the church money but allowed them to break their lease with no penalties.

Then there was a retired government worker who was a chain smoker. That was bad enough, but the staircase and design of the second floor acted like a chimney leaving smoke residue which had to be scraped off the walls and ceilings prior to re-painting.

Our current renters are two sweet women with two cats. They called me on Monday night to let me know there was no water. The first thing I asked them to do was to open the crawl space and check to see if there was a pool down there or if they heard water running. The pipe has burst before. Nope no water. Then I’m thinking huh, did I put that water bill on auto pay? Yes, I did.

Did I change it when my credit card was last breached? Yes, I think so. On further investigation, no it wasn’t on auto pay and I had indeed gotten a letter stating service was to be cut off by October 14. They cut it off on October 20. I had neglected to open the letter. So, I apologized profusely and offered to pay for bottled water until the next morning when I could take care of the bill.

They declined driving to the store for water since they had consumed adult beverages. They said they’d get help from neighbors should the need arise. Happy they consumed alcohol responsibly. I was able to pay the bill online that night but could not re-connect the water without speaking with a human.

The next morning, I called the water company. The first message I was given was, “We are having issues with autopay, please contact us directly for more information.” When I was connected with a human, I was able to get the water turned on. Thankfully no extra $75 connection fee was required and the ladies had water by 10:30am.

The morals of the story, because sometimes we all need to be reminded:

Open your mail as soon as you get it.

Have a handy person on speed dial, you will need them unless you live close and have a bunch of duct tape.

Screen all applicants and have an iron clad lease for the state in which the property is located

Have a lawyer on speed dial, just in case.

Insure your property as a rental.

Have a good sense of humor.

Be willing to keep the deposit if someone really messes up the place.

These lovely “home frocks” (L) would cost $53.65 today, and it’s unlikely anyone would feel the need to be so dressed to stay home and wash the kitchen floor and make dinner. They might even be overkill for many of todays’ more casual offices, and while

none of us is likely to wear a sundress (R) to work, it is evocative of the era when the

Alice presented the Vision Board and Goal Setting Workshop at the Congress, International Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, St. Kitts in November 2024. The workshop was met with enthusiastic acclaim! Alice will lead this dynamic workshop on August 13, 2025, at 8 pm Eastern Standard Time.

BPW: A Legacy of Lifting Women in Business

From it’s earliest days, Business and Professional Women (BPW) was more than a name – it was a mission. Founded in 1919, BPW emerged from a post- war world where women had proven themselves in the workforce but stillfaced steep barriers to advancement, recognition, and equal opportunity. The organization became a national voice for women who were determined to build businesses, lead in the workplace, and shape their own financial futures.

BPW was built to connect women in business and the professions, creating a space for mentorship and skill- building. Its early members campaigned for equal pay, access to credit, and the right to work without discrimination – issues that still resonate today. Over time, BPW also became a launchpad for entrepreneurship, helping women chart their own paths as business owners, consultants and innovators.

Today, our Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee carries that legacy forward by empower members with tools, training and community. We understand the spirit of BPW lies in building each other up – sharing insights, lifting voices, and igniting economic potential. As we look to the future, we honor the past by continuing to champion women who are bold enough to dream and brave enough to build.

Honoring the Past, Present and Future of Entrepreneurs:

1919: Madam C.J. Walker build a thriving business empire in the early 20th century by creating and selling hair care products for Black women. She is often recognized as the first self- made millionaire in the United States. Though she passed away in 1919, her legacy was in full force and her company employed thousands of women. She championed not only economic independence for women but also education, philanthropy and community activism.

2000: Sara Blakely. In 2000, Sara Blakely launched Spanx, turning a $5,000 personal investment into a billion-dollar business. With no background in fashion and no outside investors, she revolutionized the shapewear industry and became a role model for women-led startups. Her success story highlights the turn of the century surge in women entrepreneurs breaking into global markets with innovation and grit.

2025: Kim Roxie (Emerging Entrepreneur) As the Founder of LAMIK Beauty (Love and Makeup in Kindness), Kim Roxie is gaining attention as a trailblazing beauty entrepreneur focused on clean cosmetics for women of color.Based in Houston, Texas, Roxie combines social entrepreneurship with beauty innovation. By 2025, her company continues to grow as a digitally native brand with purpose at its core, embodying the future of business: inclusive, mission-driven, and tech savvy.

ESB met on June 11th. Our speaker was Brooke Burns, a member of NFBPWC-Virtual. Brooke Burns is an amazing and talented Life and Business Coach from North Carolina. June’s topic was “AI – How to Use ChatGPT in Your Small Business” Thank you to the 42 members who signed up for this workshop. Any Brooke Burns presentations is interactive and informative and valuable – and the June workshop was no different. We had fun and learned so much.

Women who communicate effectively are statistically 1.5 times more likely to be perceived as leaders

Our April 9th session, co-hosted by the ESB Committee and the Women on the Move Committee, was a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of strong communication skills—especially for women in leadership and entrepreneurial spaces. We had the pleasureof participating in this session led by the dynamic Odile Bocande-Koffi, an executive coach whose work spans multiple continents. Odile brought a wealth of experience and insight, opening the session with a compelling message: communication isn’t just a soft skill—it’s a leadership imperative. She reminded us that many women struggle to effectively present themselves in professional settings, often due to subtle, yet significant communication gaps. The session quickly focused on how mastering both verbal and non-verbal communication is essential to building presence, negotiating confidently, and stepping into leadership roles with authenticity.

What made this session especially engaging was its interactive format. Odile skillfully guided us through personal reflections, encouraging participants to share real-life stories of miscommunication. Some of the tales were funny, others deeply relatable—but all illustrated how easily misunderstandings can occur when we aren’t mindful of our tone, body language, or the clarity of our message.

From written communication tips to active listening techniques, Odile provided a toolkit that participants could immediately apply. She also emphasized that women who communicate effectively are statistically 1.5 times more likely to be perceived as leaders—an empowering statistic that sparked discussion and motivation among everyone in the virtual room.

One of the most impactful segments centered around how we tailor our communication to different personality types. Whether dealing with assertive, passive, or aggressive clients or colleagues, Odile provided practical strategies for adjusting our approaches without losing authenticity. We were reminded that professionalism doesn’t mean stripping away who we are—it means amplifying our strengths with purpose and clarity. As we wrapped up, the takeaway was clear: strong communication is not just about being heard; it’s about being understood and respected. This collaboration between our two committees showcased not only the power of partnership but also the deep desire within our community to grow, lead, and lift others through our words and actions.

The outline for “Mastering the Art of Impactful Communication” included “Captivate Your Audience” Odile Bocande-Kofi did exactly that. We thank her for sharing her wisdom with us so effectively.

Honoring Military Appreciation Month: The Strength Behind the Service from the ESB Committee May is Military Appreciation Month—a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who serve and have served in our Armed Forces, and to recognize the vital role they play not only in our nation's defense but also in our communities and economy. For the ESB Committee, this month is particularly meaningful, because among our members are veterans, military spouses, or strong supporters of military-affiliated entrepreneurs. Their stories, resilience, and values remind us that service doesn’t end with a uniform—it continues in boardrooms, home offices, and storefronts across the country.

Veteran-owned and military-affiliated businesses bring a unique perspective to the marketplace. Discipline, adaptability, leadership, and commitment—qualities honed through military service—translate well into entrepreneurial success. The SBA (Small Business Administration) says that one in ten small businesses in America is veteran- owned. These businesses generate billions in revenue each year and provide jobs to millions, creating ripple effects that strengthen our local and national economies.

We encourage our members to connect with the small business owners and women entrepreneurs. This month especially, we encourage our NFBPWC community to take a moment to connect with and support veteran-owned businesses. Whether through a purchase, a collaboration, or simply sharing their story, your support honors their service and contributes to a thriving, values-driven economy. Let’s also take time to express appreciation for military spouses, who often manage the dual challenges of supporting their servicemember while pursuing careers of their own. They, too, are an essential part of the military community—and their entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability are worth celebrating.

As we observe Military Appreciation Month, let us continue to uplift and empower those who have served, and those still serving in different ways.

As entrepreneurs, our creative spark often ignites innovation and drives our ventures forward. But while we're busy creating, it’s easy to lose sight of the mechanisms that keep the business humming in the background. I recently learned this firsthand when a faulty automation caused me to lose sales and opportunities for engagement. It was a stark reminder of the importance of performing regular systems health checks.

When Creativity Overshadows Operations. In the excitement of designing new products, services, or marketing strategies, essential operational details can be overlooked. Automations that once worked seamlessly might falter without your notice, leading to unprocessed sales, unanswered inquiries, or unmet deadlines. A well-oiled creative mind needs a well- oiled business machine to bring its visions to life effectively.

Why Regular Systems Health Checks Matter. Just as we perform maintenance on a car or update our software, our business processes require regular check-ins. Technology, customer needs, and market conditions change rapidly, and failing to adapt can result in missed opportunities. Conducting a systems health check ensures that your tools, automations, and workflows are functioning optimally.

Schedule It Like a CEO. The key to staying on top of your systems is consistency. Schedule your systems health check as a non-negotiable task—quarterly, semi-annually,

or annually, depending on your business complexity. Block out dedicated time and approach it as you would a meeting with a top client: professionally and with focus.

Think of your business as a garden; your creative pursuits are the seeds, but strong systems provide the fertile soil in which they grow.

Taking time to ensure your systems are functioning effectively isn’t just a maintenance task—it’s a growth strategy. By making this practice a priority, you protect your business, amplify your impact, and set the stage for long-term success.

At our December 11, 2024, meeting we had our first ever virtual holiday office party! We celebrated with festive attire, beverages and a snacks. The best part is that we didn’t have to leave the comfort of our own homes!

To kick the new year off, Nicole Callendar will focus on hiring for smaller businesses on January 8, 2025, at 8 pm.

At the February 12, 2025, meeting we will feature Cynthia Oliver with Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Duquesne University. She will share information on how to complete your women’s business certification.

On March 11, 2025, Steve Wachnowsky, the Chair of the SCORE Blue Ridge Chapter, will give us an overview of SCORE and how your local chapter can help your business.

Here is some information about Alexandria:

Alexandria Jackson Ward is a mom, wife, banker, and tax professional. She currently lives in upstate New York with her husband, daughter, and dog. She is a senior adjustor at the 16th largest bank in New York State and she also works for an American multinational business software company where she teaches a variety of tax topics. She currently serves as the treasurer at her church. When she is not counting or teaching, she loves to cook.

Alexandria holds degrees from Argosy and Penn State University. She is certified and credentialed to prepare taxes in more than 40 states and territories. She is currently spending the most time designing a training for 15k new tax professionals which starts in January 2025.

Here is his Bio: Rich Longo, R.N. FACHE, FACMPE, CTC, is the Director of Duquesne University Palumbo-Donahue School of Business - Small Business Development Center (SBDC) where he assists new and existing businesses in the areas of business plan development: financial forecasting/financial statement development: marketing strategy and implementation plans. Rich is also certified in Technology Commercialization.

Previous positions held include Owner/CEO of RIOL; LLC a boutique consulting firm specializing in Group Medical Practice Management, Pay for Performance, Accountable Care Organizations (ACO’S), and Productivity and Quality Outcomes-based physician based compensation and Senior Vice President, Network Management for Devon Health Services, Inc. King of Prussia, PA, one of the largest regional PPOs in the Northeast.

Rich has also served as adjunct faculty at Robert Morris University and the University of Pittsburgh. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (cum laude) from Duquesne University and a Master’s Degree (magna cum laude) from the University of Pittsburgh.

Rich Longo was named distinguished alumni in the School of Nursing in 2021.

It wasn't until 1938 that the week was officially recognized and celebrated every year since.

WHEREAS, working women constitute 76 million, or almost half, of the nation's workforce and strive to serve their communities, their states, and their nation in professional, civic and cultural capacities; and

WHEREAS, women-owned businesses account for 19.9% percent of all U.S. business, generating $1.9 trillion in sales and employing $10.1 million people; and

WHEREAS, working women should be applauded for their contributions to the workplace and the financial stability of their families especially during the economic downturn when more women have become their family’s breadwinner; and

WHEREAS, the major goal of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc is to promote equity for all women and to help create better conditions for working women through the study and advocacy of social, educational and economic issues impacting women in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, since 1928, National Business Women's Week® has honored the contributions of working women and employers who support working women and their families.

Yes, I have agreed to continue to chair the Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee for another 2 years. President Barbara will also be contributing as she is also a small business owner. As part of the NFBPWC Club, I hope you will consider joining us on a regular basis for our Entrepreneur and Small Business Committee meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 8 pm Eastern (a time change to accommodate the folks in the Pacific time zone). These meetings are open to NFBPWC members and guests. You don’t have to be a small business owner or entrepreneur to attend the meetings, we welcome everyone!

“Help me get some help for my business!” (Looking for an HR professional who could help us understand the correct/legal questions to ask a potential new hire)

Annie Easley (April 23, 1933 – June 25, 2011)

I’m out here to get the job done, and I knew I had the ability to do it, and that’s where my focus was.”

Computer Scientist

In 1955, Easley began her career as a “human computer,” doing computations for researchers. This involved analyzing problems and doing calculations by hand. Her earliest work involved running simulations for the newly planned Plum Brook Reactor Facility. When hired, she was one of only four African-American employees at the Lab. In a 2001 interview she said that she had never set out to be a pioneer. “I just have my own attitude. I’m out here to get the job done, and I knew I had the ability to do it, and that’s where my focus was.” Even in the face of discrimination, she persevered. “My head is not in the sand. But my thing is, if I can’t work with you, I will work around you. I was not about to be [so] discouraged that I’d walk away. That may be a solution for some people, but it’s not mine.”

Are You Ready for National Business Women’s Week?

Many of you know that Marsha (Marsha Riibner-Cady) and I have held many posts within BPW – both nationally and in our home state of North Carolina.

Every year, around this time, comes the question “What are we going to do during National Business Women’s Week??? The longer we have been around, the more we learned that for some things, it is very late to be asking that question in August, when NBWW is always the third week in October – but it is NEVER NEVER NEVER too late to do something.

For our newer members, who might not have heard of National Business Women’s Week:

Since 1928 – National Business Women’s Week has stood as a special time for us to honor and recognize the achievements of working women – all working women.

First observed in April (15^th – 22^nd), 1928, Lena Madesin Phillips (the then National and BPW International President) is quoted as saying it’s purpose was:

“to focus public attention upon a better business woman for a better business world.”

Ten years later (1938), President Herbert Hoover was recognized the efforts of women in business via a letter which stands as a template of the proclamations made by presidents who came after him. This same year NBWW was moved from April to the third full week in October.

So, what do we do? What can we do?

One of the original ideas for this week was to use each of the five days to recognize a certain area of interest / activity.

Goodwill Day – working with / connecting with other women’s organizations,

Education Day – putting the spotlight on equitable education opportunities,

Club Rally Day – celebrating your own club with a membership drive activity,

Legislative Day – focusing on legislation of interest to women, on any level, local, state, or national, and

Community Day – where you recognize the leaders in your community.

Taking on one of the topics above, or all of them, is a great way to celebrate and raise awareness and maybe help someone or gain new members.

Another way is to involve your local businesses – ask them to participate by recognizing their women workers, or clients.

Involve local, state, and federal level government offices by asking for proclamations, or that they recognize the women who work there during that week.

Don’t forget the media. Social media, local media, national media – it can all play a part in making National Business Women’s Week a positively “noisy” event.

Regarding proclamations – below find two examples. One was issued by a Governor, one by a small-town mayor. These are good examples - but keep in mind, getting a governor, a mayor or even a town council to sign one may take time. They should be submitted with as much detail as possible, ahead of time. The higher the office, the longer lead time is needed, so do your research – contact the office you wish to submit and find out how they need the information and when.

Additionally – the information / text of both examples, including the date and fact checking, is not done by the officials’ office, but that of those who submit the request.

In the above example, the date is high lit, because that would be something they would adjust.

Hopefully from these two examples, you can create proclamations specific to your needs and create a successful buzz and recognition for National Business Women’s Week in your area.

The Elevator Pitch - Creating a Compelling and Concise Introduction

Getting on the Elevator. When time is limited, an elevator pitch makes an efficient introduction to your business and what you have to offer prospective clients. Your pitch could be someone’s first impression of you and your business. Do you want to make an impression that gets you in the door or one that leaves you on the wrong side?

An effective pitch is a short statement defines your product or service or organization and clearly explains your value proposition. It is a conversation, not a slogan, a billboard or a commercial.

Where to begin? Start developing your pitch with the most basic information. Who are you and what type of business or product do you have? Follow that up with 5 statements of no more than 3 sentences that describe you and your product or service and your value. As you write and rewrite these statements, look for ways to be engaging but still clear and concise.

Practice. The intention of your pitch is to be spoken. As you drill down to your most effective statements, consider the following: Are you talking to them or at them? Remember the written statement may sound disconnected when spoken aloud. Ask yourself - would you really say this to someone in a conversation? Is this how you would talk to someone? Would you be receptive if someone said this to you? As you practice your pitch and become comfortable with it, be sure your intended audience will feel like you are talking to them, not at them.

Getting off the Elevator. Remembering that your pitch is only the first step, consider what comes next. How will you close that conversation and leave space for follow through? Be ready with your business card and a path to your next meeting.
