Our Rising Stars—Allies in Action

This month’s theme, Allies in Action, feels especially fitting as we refocus our commitment to our Young BPW members, our vibrant, ambitious, and fiercely talented RISING STARS.

For a few years now, Time Magazine has had an annual “Time100 Next” list. It recognizes influential figures across the spectrum of endeavors. They are seen as “shaping the future and defining the next generation of leadership.” They are defined by what they do and not the calendar.

And I believe we have those same stars right here in NFBPWC.

Too often, the phrase Young BPW has been treated as a qualifier, something that comes “before.” That is not how I see it. Young BPW is a badge of momentum. It’s where possibility meets purpose and it represents the energy that keeps our Federation in motion. You are not the future of this organization; you are its current pulse.

As we head toward December, we’ll be realigning our constellation, bringing your voices together to chart a path forward. Consider this your early call to connect, contribute, and claim your space in that sky. Many exciting things are coming and I want every single one of you to be part of it.

Honoring Young BPW Leader, Bryn Norrie

It is with both pride and gratitude that we share an update about our Young BPW Officer, Bryn Norrie.

With great regret, her resignation was accepted on September 19th, 2025.

As many of you know, in August, Bryn began her studies at George Washington University Law School, a remarkable milestone and a testament to her dedication and talent. With the demanding schedule of a first-year law student, Bryn has recognized that she cannot fully continue her

responsibilities as our Young BPW Officer. While we are sad to see her step back from her role (and no – she is not leaving us as a member), we absolutely must and do celebrate the exciting new path she is pursuing.

Bryn was elected to the NFBPWC Executive Committee as Young BPW Officer in July 2024. At the International Congress in November 2024, our region (North America and the Caribbean) elected her to be our Regional Young BPW

Chair. Her leadership has been inspiring, not only to our Young BPW members but also the 2024-2026 Executive Committee, where her insight, energy, and collaborative spirit have been invaluable.

On behalf of NFBPWC, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Bryn for her service, her leadership, and the passion she has brought to every role she has held. We are proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the time she has given to our organization.

As she continues her law studies, we know Bryn will excel, and we will be cheering her on every step of the way. We wish her nothing but the best and look forward to supporting her endeavors as a continuing member of NFBPWC.

Hello BPW! Happy June!

In honor of International Day of Women in Diplomacy on June 24th, I would like to discuss the Women, Peace and Security program that the DoD recently canceled.

The idea for the program came into the international diplomatic imagination in 2000, when the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 that affirmed the role women play in all aspects of the prevention and resolution of conflicts. In 2017, the US Congress passed the Women, Peace, and Security Act and President Trump signed it into law and published a strategy for implementation of the law. This strategy included ensuring women were included in decision making related to crises and protection of women’s and girl’s human rights. This initiative included several agencies across the US government but has garnered headlines in recent months due to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth canceling the program.

When I was in college, I conducted research on the ideas central to this program. My research reaffirmed what those in the international diplomacy space have known for years. Inclusion of women in peace processes makes the peace deals more stable, inclusive, and long lasting. Not only that, but when women are included in peace processes make it significantly more likely that considerations specific to women are included in peace agreements.

The knowledge that women bring to the table about their communities and what will work best to keep the peace is unparalleled to many other alternatives tried in diplomacy.

The WPS program wasn’t perfect, but it highlighted important gendered gaps in the diplomatic spaces. Gaps that lead to missed opportunities for true diplomatic and peace breakthroughs. This program also recognized that women are not an underrepresented minority that needs more voice in diplomatic spaces, but rather that women are quite literally half of the world and it is crucial that their interests and perspectives be represented at every level possible.

So, this International Women in Diplomacy Day, I would like to ask that you take a moment to remember all of the women crucial to diplomacy that changed their communities for the better that you have never heard of and those for whom it will be harder to get involved in the diplomacy because of the end of this vital program.

I Want to Hear from You!

Hello BPW! Happy May!

Hopefully, you’re getting excited for summer; I know I am. This summer is going to be one of many transitions for me and my family. From me moving to a new place and getting ready for law school, to my brother graduating from college in NYC, and my parents potentially PCSing, it will be a busy summer.

May is National Military Appreciation Month, which is close to my heart, as my father is active-duty Army and almost everyone in my family is in the Army or married to someone in the Army. It's truly like a family business for us.

Those who serve are so honorable, and I am thankful for their sacrifice. In addition to honoring them this month, I would like to ask you to also honor their families this month. While their service is wildly different, military families also serve. Whether it’s a support system for each other during deployments and difficult times, moving with their active-duty spouses or parents to support the mission, or ensuring many traditions are preserved for families and soldiers, the families are there every day.

I am extremely proud of my father and am honored to be part of a military family. It was a great way to growup, and I appreciate the perspective it gave me of the world around me, and the values it instilled in me.

So, happy National Military Appreciation Month to all our Military-Connected BPW Ladies. Your service is greatly appreciated!

A Roadmap for Young Women

As you all remember, last month I announced the new YBPW initiative, “A Roadmap for Young Women.” You likely also noticed that I have not followed up on this at all. Unfortunately, I was part of the thousands of Americans who have lost their jobs due to Trump’s freeze on federal spending, specifically in foreign assistance. My company knew this was coming and I was working crazy overtime trying to get as much money to my partners overseas as I could for work they had already completed prior to our stop work orders; before my company couldn’t afford to do so anymore. Then once I was indefinitely furloughed, I took many moments to just breathe and evaluate what to do next. All of this is a long backstory to say that I am trying to get back on my game now and will be sending out this survey soon. I suddenly have copious amounts of free time and am looking forward to spending it with you all and hearing your stories!

I would like to close my monthly update with a request: if you have the time and would be willing to volunteer some of your time to supporting the thousands of women making a transition out of international development, please let me know!

Our entire industry is gone and most of us are having to pivot ourselves to new careers for the first time. My colleagues and I have been putting together resource guides for this information to be shared.

Remarkable Woman – Yursa Mardini

This month, I would like to highlight Yursa Mardini. Yursa is a 26-year-old woman born in Damascus, Syria. She was a promising young swimmer in Syria with dreams of qualifying for the Olympics. It was difficult for her to train when the Syrian Civil War broke out.

After a missile destroyed her home, she and her sister, Sara, decided to flee Syria and go to Europe. They went through Lebanon and Turkey before getting on to a small boat organized by a migrant smuggler. There were 18 people on this boat, despite the boat only being made to hold less than half of that.

This boat was supposed to take them to Greece. However, partway through their journey, their boat started sinking. Remarkably, Yursa and Sara used their strength in swimming to pull their boat through the water for 3 hours until they landed in Greece. Everyone aboard survived this treacherous journey.

The sisters then traveled by foot to Germany from Greece and requested asylum in Germany. While in Germany, a swim coach found Yursa and began working with her.

Eventually, Yursa qualified for the Olympics as part of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team in 2016 and competed in the 100 m women’s butterfly and 100 m women’s freestyle events.

Since then, she has become a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and is considered one of the world's strongest advocates for refugee rights.

In 2023, she started the Yursa Mardini Foundation to support global sports and education for refugees. Her story is truly inspiring and demonstrates the power of community and support even in the most desperate times.

Yursa’s inspiring story has turned into a docu-drama titled “The Swimmers” and can be watched on Netflix.

A Roadmap for Young Women

This month, I am excited to announce the YBPW initiative “A Roadmap for Young Women.” Over the coming weeks and months, I will ask members to sit down for short 30-minute interviews focusing on their experiences in life and with BPW. I am also interested in learning more about the advice you would give to young women getting their start in the world today. These videos will be made publicly available and posted online. If this isn’t your thing - we can work together to find other ways to engage you!

I have also stepped into the role of Regional YBPW. I am excited to take on this responsibility and work with RC Karen Gorgerat, and I will keep you all updated on our activities and work.

These are crazy and chaotic times with all the changes going on around the world - please feel free to reach out to me if you ever need to talk to someone. Community is so fulfilling, and this is the time to lean into our community. As always, if you know any young

The new year is an exciting time for new initiatives. This year, I have a plethora of things that I would like to try and get better at.

This includes trying to be more present with my friends and family as I begin to close a chapter of life; reflecting on and being grateful for that chapter as I move into a new one. 2024 was a big year for me. I think that the “2023 me” would not even recognize the “2024 me,” which is hopefully a good thing. The jury is still out on that.

New Year’s always makes me so excited because each year of my life has been wildly different from each other, and I cannot wait to see what this next year has in store.

I have some exciting YBPW initiatives that I am looking forward to getting starte and cannot wait to share with you all as I get ready to dive into the work. I hope that all of our reflections from this year, both personal and collective, can lead us into a happy new year filled with progress and joy!

At the end of the year my family always breaks the oplatek wafer and says a little blessing I would like to share with you all know: Here’s the good health, wealth, and happiness in the new year!

Hello BPW!

Coming off of the Thanksgiving holiday, I would like to reflect on the things for which I am grateful.

The past couple of months have been really difficult for me. From a litany of things happening in my personal life that impacted me more than I expected, to national and international events that have broken my heart and tested my resolve. I feel like I have not been able to catch a break.

As the holidays roll in, I have used them as an opportunity to reflect on the good things happening around me and find hope in the small things. To start, I am incredibly grateful that I have friends and family who I love and care about and who love and care about me in return. It is so nice to know that there are people around me who I can lean on in my times of need.

In the same vein, I am grateful for this BPW community. Being surrounded by women who are like me and who have lived experiences similar to mine makes me feel sane. This community grounds my reality and gives me the opportunity to seek advice during difficult times and makes them feel less daunting.

I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to grow and learn as a person. I have been able to do things that are scary to me, like presenting at an international conference, and been given the grace to be bad at them and get better for the next time.

But most of all, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience all of life. Every hard day, every exciting piece of new, every person I interact with adds more vibrant colors to my life than I ever thought possible.

As I continue my journey, that is really all I can ask for. What are you grateful for this holiday season?

Young BPW is busy this month putting together our programming for the next year. We are hoping to focus on mentoring and business skills programs, as well as fun activities like virtual happy hours.

College semesters are starting soon! If you know any young women entering university who you think would benefit from BPW, please have them reach out to me. We can work together to get them the support they need as they start their college experience. Finally, over the next few weeks I plan to reach out to state presidents and see what potential areas there are for collaboration between the amazing work being done in your states and what we are trying to do with YBPW nationally.

I am very excited and honored to get to work with such amazing women and can’t wait to see what we’re able to accomplish over the next two years!

About Bryn Norrie

As incoming Young BPW for the 2024-2026 Executive Committee term, I have been a member of BPW since 2021, when I joined as an Executive Committee intern while in college. BPW has been an integral part of my college and young professional life. BPW equipped me with skills I use every day to navigate through the world and learn how to be a professional.

The amazing network of women in BPW have continued to be there for me through every stage of my life in the last 3 years. I know that I can always lean on my BPW sisters for advice and cheerleading when I need it. I hope to be able to share this wonderful community with more young women and grow BPW’s reach.

I have plans to continue outreach to student groups and ensure the depth of knowledge and experience we have in this organization is saved and communicated to a new generation of young women professionals and leaders.

I currently live in Arlington, VA and work for an international development NGO called

Counterpart International. I work on pro-democracy, media freedom, and women’s empowerment projects mainly funded by USAID. I have gotten the chance to travel around the world with this job and appreciate the importance of connections, friendship, and support (something always provided to me by BPW).

I graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2023 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies. In my free time I like to hike, bake, and spend time with my friends and family.

I am looking forward to serving as the YBPW on the Executive Committee for the next two years.

October is one of my favorite months - the leaves are changing, there’s a crispness to the air - spooky season, need I say more! There is much to love about October and so many fun activities to engage in. However, while we are cozying up for cooler weather, we must remember that home is not always a safe, cozy space for all.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Domestic Violence Awareness Day falls on October 20^th. Domestic violence continues to disproportionately affect women and rates of violence that soared during the pandemic remain high. If you or someone you know if experiencing domestic violence, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

In BPW news, our initiative to end period poverty continues to make exciting progress! This Period Action Day, held annually on the second Saturday of October, we are encouraging each chapter to host their own period product drive to donate to a local organization helping women in need. I am delighted to report that we have participation across the US!

New York City is hosting a Happy Hour Period Product Drive on Thursday, October 12^th, from 5 to 7 p.m. in collaboration with a local woman-owned bar in Brooklyn.

Virtual chapter members in North Carolina are working with their local community college to provide supplies for students in need – they will be adding period products to their stash of supplies! California has several drives in the works hosted by East LA/Montebello and the Sierra Mar District. All supplies from the inaugural period product drive hosted by BPW Burbank have been donated. NW Pennsylvania will be having its district meting on October 14^th to determine how best to support the period poverty initiative. If you have any questions on how to host your own period product drive, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can also join our next period poverty meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 19^th. Another aspect of our Period Action Day outreach is an educational campaign on the realities of period poverty. We will have a social media toolkit for members to use! We also have a new resolution to end period poverty, coming up for a vote by the Board of Directors at the next meeting on Tuesday, October 17^th. We couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate Period Action Day than passing this resolution!

The 27th Annual Youth Assembly by Emily VanVleck - Young BPW Chair

The weekend of August 12th, myself and two young BPW members from the NYC chapter, Ms. Djenabou Bah and Ms. Rafath Gnabode, attended the 27th annual Youth Assembly hosted by AFS. We were able to attend this conference thanks to generous funding from BPW International.

I learned about the Youth Assembly through an advertisement on LinkedIn. It seemed a great way to network with youth from around the world, learn new skills, and promote BPW and our work. When I mentioned the conference in the YBPW Global WhatsApp group, I was encouraged to go by past International YBPW Chair Neelima Basnet, who had previously attended and said the experience changed her life.

The conference was attended by hundreds of youth delegates from over 60 countries. The opening ceremony took place on International Youth Day in the United Nations ECOSOC chamber; it was an exciting experience. Throughout the weekend, various panel discussions were hosted featuring industry leaders and fellow youth making a difference.

It was inspiring to see so many young people taking steps to address the challenges they saw in their communities and the world.

I attended one panel hosted by Youth Assembly alums and learned how they used their experience at the conference to create new movements and initiatives. I hope to have a similar story to share next year!

During the second day of the conference, I had the pleasure of presenting the Afghan Women Project during a live pitch to a panel of judges as one of the finalists for the AFS Young Global Citizens award. Although we ultimately did not win the award, it was an honor to be selected as a finalist.

The experience presented an amazing opportunity to share about BPW and our work. Many people approached me after the pitch, asking how they could be involved with the project and recommending organizations for collaboration. Several people asked about chapters in various countries, including Peru, Colombia, Nigeria, and Senegal. I felt truly honored to be representing BPW at the Youth Assembly.

Beyond the programs offered at the Youth Assembly, the networking opportunities were fantastic. One person I spoke with was an employee of AFS who represents the organization at the UN. He was so impressed by my work on the Afghan Women Project that he invited me to interview for a position on the UN Department of Global Communications Youth Representative Steering Committee, of which he is a senior advisor. This would be an excellent opportunity for BPW to strengthen our relationship and presence at the UN and increase the notoriety of our organization. I would love to discuss this opportunity with our UN representatives.

Attending the Youth Assembly proved a great way to market BPW and provided professional growth and networking for our members.

I would love to have more YBPW members worldwide be able to attend next year. I think there is great potential for marketing and bringing in new members. Thank you, again, for providing the funding for our young members in NYC to be able to attend this event. Hopefully, we will be able to attend again next year!

Reflecting on My Youth Assembly Experience by Djenabou Bah

I am honored to have had the opportunity to attend the Youth Assembly: Dare to Reshape the World as a delegate for the National Federation of Business and Professional Women Club. It was an exciting and informative experience for those three days from August 12-14th.

The program in general held various themes on the UN SDGS. Among the topics were diversity, equity and inclusion in global careers, education in crisis: refugees and displaced persons, bridging digital divide and technological advancements, the roles of young people in promoting and implementing the sustainable development goals, climate change, leadership, etc.!

The opening ceremony took place at United Nations Headquarters where AFS Youth Assembly delegates and leaders joined live to celebrate the International Youth Day. Among the program were some opening remarks from various leaders, a panel discussion on intergenerational solidarity and a special NYC Mayoral Proclamation.

Day 2 was filled with engaging panels and workshops. We attended the career opportunities at the Opportunities Fair where we had the opportunities to navigate global opportunities and build connections.

The exhibition showcased international non-profits, UN programs and agencies, and corporations as well as campaigns and initiatives to be involved in. The most exciting part of that second day was the AFS Award for Young Global Citizens pitches. This award recognizes young people for their commitment to improve the global community and contribution to a more just, peaceful, and tolerant world.

What made it more exciting for me is the fact that Emily Vanvleck, my colleague, and delegate from the NFBPWC was among the 10 selected finalists to pitch their projects in front of a panel of juries to win $10,000. She delivered an amazing presentation about the NFBPWC’s Afghan Women Project.

The wrap day was also filled with engaging activities, panels, and workshops and a project showcase where I was selected to participate in the Youth Assembly’s Action and Impact Hub: Project Showcase. This was a great opportunity for delegates to show off the impactful projects they have been working on. There again, Emily and I had the opportunity to present our work to other delegates and attendees by providing a poster board and flyers about the NFBPWC’s Afghan Women Project.

We also had the chance to interact with other presenters regarding their project. The program ended with a CultureFest with live performances and a Cultural Fashion Show where delegates from over 60 countries wore their national attire, went on stage to celebrate diversity.

I got a lot from this Youth Assembly. The Impact Hub Showcase gave me the opportunity to talk to other delegates about their work and campaigns and how our organization can collaborate with them.

At the Opportunity Fair, I also had the opportunity to interact with leaders and learned about different companies, initiatives and campaigns that will be great to get involved with. At the CultureFest, I was exposed and learned about new cultures and countries' flags.

From the workshops and panel discussion, I learned more about grants, ways to approach them and various websites to find them. I also learned about fellowships and scholarship programs that can be very beneficial to the organization. I also got various networking contacts from the UN Civil society and organization, the USAID, UNDP etc.

I can't thank the NFBPWC enough for this great opportunity as I can not quantify the experience, knowledge and network I got from that Assembly.

Attending the 27th Annual Youth Assembly in NYC by Rafath Gnabode

It was an immense pleasure to have the opportunity to attend the Youth Assembly this year. This was my first time ever attending the Youth Assembly with AFS and I would say it was an amazing experience. The first day of the Youth Assembly was August 12th which was International Youth Day.

The location was at the United Nations Headquarters where countless Youths gathered from all over the world. I had the opportunity to learn more about the amazing work that youths are accomplishing in their home countries. I was also able to have a conversation with these said people on their projects and how they came about. I met people with so much wisdom, passion, empathy, and drive to make the world a better place.

Being able to see people who are around the same age as me taking on huge projects and having such a great influence on people’s lives was without a doubt incredible.

I learned about the importance of the youth of today leading and being part of decision-making. I’m now more than ever driven to put my ideas and plans into action.

In addition to the amazing youths I met, I’ve also made connections with amazing well-known staff of organizations, programs, and corporations. I believe that with them on our side, we’ll be able to achieve so much and greatly impact people. I was also influenced by the work they’re each doing in their respective organizations.

During the following 2 days of the Youth Assembly, we attended sessions, opportunities fairs, and more. Something I learned during these days is the steps I can take toward tackling Sustainable Developments Goals.

As youths, sometimes we’re not sure how to make our voices heard and what actions we can take to tackle issues rampant in our community.

I was able to learn from the youths and staff about the actions I can take and the works I can do in my community to achieve the goal of SDGs and other issues I’m passionate about. From my experience at the 27th Youth Assembly, I believe that young leaders are the future.

Young people in the lead are without a doubt needed more now than ever. We have the power to change the world and it’s time we believe so.

Hello YBPWers!

For those who do not yet know me, I’m Emily VanVleck, your newly elected Young BPW Chair for 2022-2024. Although she will always be an honorary YBPW, Ashley Maria is no longer technically YBPW (read her goodbye letter here!), so I have the honor of taking over this role and representing us on our Executive Committee. I’d like to thank Ashley Maria for forging this path for us and advocating for equal representation of Young BPW in the US.

A little about me and my journey with NFBPWC:

I am an Oregon native and have been living in New York for five years. Professionally, I have worked as a flight attendant for eight years. During the Covid Pandemic, I took a break from my career and returned to school to complete my bachelor’s degree. I graduated from the City College of New York in June 2022, majoring in international studies with a double minor in public policy and human rights. I am passionate about advancing human rights and creating a more equitable world for all.

I started with NFBPWC in the NYC chapter as their Advocacy/UN intern summer 2021. I was excited to be working with such a historic organization dedicated to women’s equality, and I was intrigued by the consultative status with the UN. I have had quite the journey since joining NFBPWC last year! I have helped found and lead the Afghan Women Project, the subsequent Women on the Move committee, and have been appointed the YBPW Representative for NYC. Now I take on my most exciting role as part of the National Executive Committee! I am proof that you can do pretty incredible things with your NFBPWC membership.

My mission for this term:

I was excited to join NFBPWC, however, once I was a member, I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on or how I could get more involved. It wasn’t until the start of the Afghan Women Project that I felt I was engaging with the organization. This is why my first goal as YBPW Chair is to help you find ways to engage with the organization and make the most of your membership – whatever that means for you!

Do you want to hang out and chat with fellow young professionals and students? Let’s chat!
Do you have specific professional skills you’d like to develop? I will work with the L3 committee to set it up!

We all joined NFBPWC for a reason – I want to know your reason.

My next goal as YBPW Chair is to get more YBPW in leadership positions and working on committees. I helped create the Afghan Women Project because I wanted to help people. Not only has the work I have done been incredibly rewarding, but it has also been great for my resume and expanded my professional network. I have no doubt that it will one day help me land my dream job. I want to help each of you get the same value out of this organization as I have.

I want our organization to be a force to be reckoned with.

NFBPWC founders helped pass the Equal Pay Act prohibiting pay discrimination based on sex and ensuring equal pay for equal work. That is the prestige and power I hope to see restored to NFBPWC. I want us to be known as an organization that makes things happen.

I plan to strengthen our collaborations with like-minded organizations and increase our presence at the UN,
I hope to accomplish this by creating more projects focused on issues facing business and professional women, like the Afghan Women Project, and
I plan to attend more youth conferences where we can network with our fellow youths and learn about organizations working towards similar goals.

Lastly, I want to increase our YBPW and NFBPWC student members. I started this organization as an intern, then became a student member. I am now sitting on the Executive Committee as a full member. Student memberships are beneficial for our entire organization. We must make this organization more attractive to students and work with our chapters across the US to implement more student membership programs.

I know these are ambitious goals, but I am dedicated to seeing them through. I look forward to working hard to create an organization that makes a real difference for women and attracts members who want to join our momentum.

Goodbye from your 2020-2022 Young BPW NFBPWC Representative!

As my time as your Young BPW NFBPWC Representative comes to a close, I’d like to brag about all of our successes! I've enjoyed my time as a leader with NFBPWC these past two years and am grateful for the chance to bring together USA’s Young BPW members.

In 2019, I was selected by BPW International to represent the North American regions as a delegate to the United Nations. They were doing a huge push to bring in more Young BPW from around the world, thanks to the leadership of the Young BPW International Representative at the time, Neelima Basnet. She knew that bringing Young BPW to the UN would help us see the potential reach of this organization and encourage us to get more involved.

It certainly worked for me!

A week after I returned I called Sandy Thompson, the NFBPWC President, and asked if we had someone as the Young BPW Chair for the USA? We did not! Well…I wanted in! Then, with the new leadership team chosen during General Assembly in 2020, I was honored to be voted in as part of the Executive Committee (EC). I was the first Young BPW representative ever on the EC.

My first goal in this leadership role was to figure out who were the other Young BPW members in the USA! I didn’t know any of them, and we didn’t have a process yet to find them in our system. So, I approached membership chairs, presidents of clubs, even international members to get their list of known Young BPW in the USA. Then I went to work on getting us organized and learning more about each other with each Young BPW Member Spotlight.

My next goal was to improve communication so that Young BPW members knew more about what was going on in the organization.This started with bi-weekly emails to introduce them to the benefits of what NFBPWC had to offer. From there, we had quarterly meetings – sometimes with a skills lesson like negotiating – but most often it was just a time to chat and get to know each other. It was something a Young BPW member could look forward to – meeting other ambitious women like them. The Zoom software made this a whole lot easier to connect and see how truly vast our membership was across America.

While I was building our Young BPW community, I kept in the back of my mind what encouraged me to get more involved – seeing what members were doing on a National and International level, too. So, I worked with the EC to create more affordable student membership options that would also gain them membership to National and International communications. From here, our member numbers grew exponentially. We now have 35 Young BPW members across the United States and counting!

In addition to building our community, I also wanted to build our purpose. Young BPW is more than the technology we grew up with. We have so much to offer. Most of us run our own departments or our own companies. Knowing the organizational culture had to change quickly, Young BPW members were encouraged and supported to take on leadership roles in NFBPWC. From the inspired Afghan Women Project to the impactful Health Committee, our Young BPW members are stepping up and having their voices heard in this organization, an organization that takes pride in advocating for women.

I’ve been a member of BPW since high school – even directing a documentary about our history, called Business and Professional Women: A History, A Movement. Since then, I have directed many more projects, including Pioneers in Skirts, which – yes – did premiere in the pandemic! It’s time for me to hit all gears again on many new projects, so I bid you adieu!

Moving forward, I am confident we can keep this momentum going in the next administration. I hope for more Young BPW, and our members in general, to take on more leadership roles, or participate in one of our many committees.

Being part of committee is the easiest and fastest way to learn the ins and outs of the organization. And this organization really gives you back what you put into it. I’m a perfect example of that. I’ve learned so much and met such amazing people – friends for life!
