Two Years in Review

Over the past two years, NFBPWC’s Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JDEI) Committee has remained committed to creating meaningful conversations, educational opportunities, and awareness programs that reflect the diverse experiences and voices within our communities.

Through collaboration, dialogue, and advocacy, the Committee presented several impactful workshops and programs designed to educate, empower, and inspire members and guests alike.

Among the important topics explored were:

  • Education for Change
  • Equal Pay Across the Divide
  • Grief Has No Time Limit
  • A Celebration of Cultures - LGBTQ+
  • A Perspective of Journalists
  • Childhood Sexual Abuse Prevention Month featuring the important message: “Adults Breaking the Silence… that perpetuates the silence of child sexual abuse.

All of our presentations and panelists encouraged thoughtful discussion on equity, inclusion, healing, identity, and social responsibility. They also reinforced the importance of creating safe spaces where difficult but necessary conversations can take place with compassion and understanding.

The work of the JDEI Committee over these two years reflects the mission of BPW to advocate for equity, opportunity, and empowerment for all women, while recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion in building stronger communities and organizations.

As this term comes to an end, the Committee hopes to conclude with a meaningful celebration recognizing culture, freedom, resilience, and human connection. The Committee is looking at creating a program from one of these ideas:

  • June 19 Juneteenth: Commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and honoring freedom, resilience, and African American history and culture.
  • June 12 Loving Day: Recognizing the landmark 1967 Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which legalized interracial marriage and affirmed the power of love and equality.
  • June 20 World Refugee Day: Honoring the strength, courage, and resilience of refugees around the world.
  • June 21 National Indigenous Peoples Day (Canada): Celebrating the heritage, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

(Note: while the eventual program will honor the holiday’s topic, the event itself may not occur on the same calendar day as the holiday.)

As we reflect on the past two years, we recognize that the work of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion is ongoing. Progress begins with awareness, grows through conversation, and becomes meaningful through action.

The JDEI Committee extends sincere appreciation to all presenters, participants, members, and supporters who contributed to these important programs and conversations. Together, we continue to move toward a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable future.

I wish to thank my team – Monique Lee, Susan Oser, Sujata Tiwari, and Linda Weigand – a dedicated hard-working committee that went above and beyond, never giving up on any roadblocks – always looking ahead with intention for good.

This subject is crucial for all – the discussion is wide and deep. Let us stay aware and continue to seek the good in every situation to have a sunrise beyond the horizon.
